The Polish crime series the Mire take place in a small provincial town in Poland in the beginning of the 1980’s before Glasnost and the collapse of the Communist regime. Everything is grey in the series. Buildings, the weather, people, cars, food.
The Mire starts off with a prostitute and a swimming coach with connections to the communist party are found murdered. Murder has been seen before in crime series, but what separates this series from other crime series is that it takes place in communist settings and that the communist officials instantly close the case. Why do they do that? Furthermore, almost simultaneously two teenagers commit suicide and what causes them to do that?
One of the leading characters in the Mire are Witolc Wanycz; an older, experienced, and slightly cynical journalist at the local newspaper who is busy getting ready to leave Poland illegally to try to find his long-lost love in Western Germany. The other main character is Piotr Zarzycki who has just started as a journalist at the same newspaper. Piotr is young, impulsive, inexperienced but smart and idealistic. He is by the way the son of a high-ranking communist leader.
The young journalist does some digging on his own about the killings and slowly concludes that something smells rotten. He starts to believe that the arrested but mentally ill boyfriend to the murdered prostitute is innocent even though the boyfriend has admitted to killing the two people. However, everybody the young journalist talks to warns him and wants him to forget his suspicions. They all say that the killer has been found and the case is now closed.
Still Piotr is convinced that something is terribly wrong and slowly he persuades his older but reluctant colleague to take an interest in the case. Things now escalate and more and more things turn up in the Mire that don’t add up and, in the end, everything collapses just like the regime did.
The Mire is an excellent crime series. The story line might not be the most original, but the historic settings create another perspective than if it had been shot in today’s Poland. The Mire is beautifully filmed, and the cast are excellent. This series is solid proof that the Polish can produce binge worthy series. The Mire can be streamed on Netflix. Season 2 of the Mire is also quite good.
