The TV series Das Boot, which can be seen on different streaming services, is quite simply an excellent series. However, let me state this right away. Das Boot is not a continuation of Wolfgang Petersen’s film of the same name from 1981. Das Boot is an independent series in its own right which is well produced, has good actors and is extremely exciting.
Das Boot begins in 1942. We follow the submarine U-612, which is manned by the inexperienced Klaus Hoffman. He is set to lead an experienced and war-accustomed crew. Klaus Hoffman, who is the son of a famous submarine commander, does everything in his power to win over the experienced crew. But he has only limited success, and his command of the submarine has far-reaching consequences.
At the same time, we follow a young woman, Simone Strasser, who has moved to La Rochelle in western France. She is going to be a translator in German and French for the local Gestapo chief. At the same time, she hopes to be closer to her brother Frank, who is a radio operator on U-612. Due to her brother’s drug dealing, Simone becomes involved in the French resistance movement. An involvement which proves to be fatal.
Das Boot is modern in production and many of the war scenes are truly nail-biting. And there are many of them. This makes the series very realistic.
The number of good actors is huge. Another quality is that the series effortlessly switches between several languages, depending on where the series takes place.
Das Boot is much more than claustrophobic submarine battle scenes or thriller suspense scenes focusing on the French Resistance movement.
I can only recommend the series, both to those of you who love war films, but also to those who are historically interested. Highly recommendable.
