The Reader on the 6.27 by French Jean-Paul Didierlaurent was a magnificent pleasure to read. The book is only 157 pages long, but during your reading you enter a fun, quiet and strange universe.
The main character is Guylain Vignolles who is 36 years old and single. He has a lifelong complex over his stupid name which he has always been bullied about. Guylain lives a grey and dull life with his goldfish Rouget de Lisle in a small apartment in Paris. He hates his job in a factory that convert books into pulp. Guylain helps feed the giant machine Zestor with books and cleaning Zestor when books have been stuck inside the beast. Guylain smuggles fragments of these books out because he thinks it is a shame to destroy the books.
Every morning at 6.27 Guylain takes the commuter train to work and when he has sat down on his usual seat, he pulls out some pages from one of the half-torn books and reads these pages aloud to the other passengers on the train which they take great pleasure in.
One day Guylain finds a flash drive under the seat on the train. When he comes home and opens the flash drive, he sees that is a 28-year-old woman who has written some chapters about herself and her life as a public toilet manager in a shopping mall.
Guylain decides with one of his friends (he has only two friends) to find the woman. And now I won’t tell you anymore, other than you’ll cheat yourself from a marvelous and fantastic adventure if you don’t read this little book. Enjoy.
