Istanbul: Where West meets East

Istanbul is where West meets East. It is a metropolis with about 15 million people. Lots of impressive sights, restaurants, shopping opportunies and most of all lots of people. It is a very fascinating city that you have to see.
Istanbul where West meets East

Let me begin by stating. Istanbul is something totally different – for starters it is not a city. No, it is a giant metropolis. Istanbul is Europe’s biggest city with about 15 million people and still counting. The size makes the city the center of finance, culture and history in Turkey.

When you arrive in this humongous city you are met by gigantic and impressive mosques and other religious buildings. In contrast you can also see modern and expensive shopping streets and malls like no others you can find. You’ll pass multiple inviting restaurants where you can relax and enjoy the fantastic Turkish food. The Turkish cuisine is renowned and is considered one of the best in the world. Or you can simply let yourself be devoured by the immense and pulsating masses of people, the many and different sounds coming from all over and the nightmarish traffic which make Istanbul to what it is. A myriad of impressions.

It’ll simply be too comprehensive to mention all the major sights the city has to offer. I’ll restrict myself to show you a few pictures of some of the most important sights. I hope you will be able to get just an idea of this enormous metropolis.

We were in Istanbul for five days which I think gave us a reasonable impression of the city.  We stayed at a small but charming hotel in the old part of town. You could sit on the rooftop of the hotel and enjoy your delicious breakfast while you were looking out at the Bosporus Strait. Our hotel was located only a few hundred meters from Haga Sofia, the enormous and very beautiful mosque and we were also within reasonable walking distance from many other important sights.

Haga Sofia, the impressive and beautiful mosque, whose influence on both Christian and Islamic history is enormous.
Inside the enormous Haga Sofia. Great beautiful ornaments and decorations fill the mosque.
The sultans of the Ottoman Empire had their officiel residence at the Topkapi palace for 400 years. The palace housed at a time around 4000 people. Today the palace is an enormous and very interesting museum. A word of advice. Arrive early in the day and set aside amble time to visit the palace.

The missus must cover her hair before entering the mosque.
The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. The vendors would very much like you to buy anything that you look at. There are 61 covered streets with more than 4000 shops and between 250,000 and 400,000 people visit the Bazaar every day. A word of warning. You can easily get lost from each other.
Istanbul is where West meets East. The city is a melting pot with 15 million people. There are numerous sights including Haga Sofia and the Blue Mosque. The Turkish cuisine is one of the world's best.
The Dolmabahçe Palace. The beautiful and impressive residence of Kemal Atatürk in Istanbul. Ataturk died in the Dolmabahçe Palace on 10 of November 1938. Kemal Atatürk is widely regarded as the founder of modern Turkey.
A picture of Istanbul. The modern metropolis.
