Whispering Shadows by Jan-Philipp Sendker: Absorbing!

Whispering Shadows is one third suspense novel,  one third love story and one third a critical view on China. The disillusioned journalist Paul Leibovitz reluctantly accepts to help an American couple to try and find their missing son on mainland China. Soon events happen and he is part of a mysterious and very dangerous investigation. The book is a real page turner.

Whispering Shadows is the first book in a new China trilogy by bestselling author Jan-Philipp Sendker. The story takes place in modern day China with background perspectives to the Cultural Revolution in the 60’s and 70’s.

Whispering Shadows is a captivating story which follows the disillusioned American journalist Paul Leibovitz who lives in solitude in Hong Kong where he tries to overcome grief after having lost his son. His marriage falters shortly after their son’s death and he is now a reclusive living in a remote area on an island close to Hong Kong.

When Paul Leibovitz by chance visits a restaurant, he is addressed by an American lady who manages to persuade Paul to look into the mysterious disappearance of her son on mainland China. Paul reluctantly agrees to try to see what he can find out about her missing son but soon events happen, and he is totally absorbed in the investigation which becomes more and more mysterious and dangerous.

The novel is one third a suspense novel, one third a love story and one third a critical view on China.  I was totally soaked up in this novel and if you like me love to get lost in a book, I can only recommend Whispering Shadows. Please read it.
