Yaniv Iczkovits deservedly won the Wingate Prize 2021 for The Slaughterman’s daughter .
This extraordinary and epic novel is set in the late 19th century when the Russian Tsar was still at the helm of the Russian empire. In the provincial town Motal where Jews are allowed to settle Mende lives with her husband Zvi-Meir and their children. However, Zvi-Meir has left Mende impoverished and with a broken heart. Fanny her courageous sister sets out to find Zvi-Meir and in doing so she leaves her husband and her five children. Fanny is the slaughterman’s daughter, and she is an expert with a knife.
Off Fanny travels armed with her knife up her skirt. When she has to cross the nearby river the silent ferryman Zizek Breshov decides to accompany her. On their way to Kyiv, they have to fight off robbers and Fanny kills some of them with her knife. Now they are murderers and once Colonel Piotr Novak of the Tsar’s secret police finds out who have done the crime Fanny and the ferryman are hunted by Novak and his men. During this man hunt Fanny kills some more men before she is captured. Now the story takes off for real and I won’t reveal anymore.
The Slaughterman’s Daughter is indeed an adventurous and beautiful novel filled with humor, detailed descriptions, satire, and colorful characters. This book is breathtaking and unforgettable. Read it!
