The German city Bremen is with its half a million citizens an exciting place to visit and a fine alternative to Hamburg if you want to see something else. Bremen goes back to the 14 century and there are many exciting and beautiful buildings to see. Besides there are numerous great restaurants and cafés to enjoy plus fine shopping opportunities if you are in the mood for that.

If you happen to visit the norther part of Germany, I strongly recommend that you visit the city of Bremen. We have been to Hamburg numerous times and we love it, but sometimes we just feel like seeing something new. That is why we decided to pay Bremen a visit for a long weekend. We had heard many good things about the city, and we were not disappointed.

The city of Bremen is situated on both sides of the river Weser which runs out into the North Sea. The city is very old and dates back to around the year of 1200 and today Bremen is a vibrant and modern city and holds more than 570,000 inhabitants. When you wander around the central part of the city you can easily see that Bremen is quite old with the many ancient and beautiful buildings.

During World War 2 the city was totally bombed out by the allied forces due to the city’s big shipyards and arms production. However, Bremen is still today a major industrial town.

There are a multitude of sights that you must see as a tourist in Bremen. These are just but a few:

  1. The impressive Gothic city hall which is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
  2. The huge statue of Roland from the year of 1404 which you find in front of the city hall. Roland was a knight, and he is considered to be protector of Bremen.
  3. Furthermore, you must visit the beautiful cathedral which is not just beautiful on the outside but also on the inside.
  4. You must stop on the town square and have a look and a photo of the statue of the Town Musicians of Bremen.
  5. Go on and have a walk in the cozy and beautiful middle age neighborhood Schnoor which is the only part of the city that has maintained its medieval look.
  6. Finally, it is an absolute must that you take a stroll along the promenade Schlachte which runs along the river Weser in the old part of Bremen. Here you will find a plentitude of restaurants, beer gardens and river boats.

There are many excellent and nice restaurants and cafés in Bremen, so you do not have to fear that you’ll end up hungry or thirsty. Lastly, I shouldn’t forget to mention that there are lots of excellent shops in the many cozy streets of Bremen.

It is on purpose that I have not mentioned the museums in Bremen as unfortunately we didn’t have time to visit any of them. Some other time though.

We had two whole days in Bremen which we think gave us an fine impression of a city that is definitely worth a visit. Strongly recommendable.
