The famous painter Alicia Berenson has apparently killed her husband by shooting him in the head 5 times with a rifle. She is accused of the murder and subsequently placed in a secure ward called the Grove for mentally ill people. Alicia has since the murder of her husband refused to utter a single word.
Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist and has through the years taken a keen interest in the murder case. Six years later he gets the opportunity to land a job at the Grove. Theo is determined to unravel the details of what happened and why Alicia is silent about the murder of her husband. Other psychologists have unsuccessfully tried to make Alicia speak but to no avail.
Theo now begins his detective work to solve what went ahead of the murder. Something is apparently not what it is supposed to be.
The novel keeps turning back to the Greek tragedy about Alcestis. A tale about a woman who died for her husband but resurrects. How is that tale connected to the murder of Alicia’s husband?
As a reader you jump from Theo Faber’s experiences and then to Alicia’s diary notes. That way we get an in depth understanding of both characters.
The Silent Patient is a suspense novel/crime novel/scary thriller. All these elements make you unable to put the book aside. At times the Silent Patient is unbearable exciting. For your own sake. READ IT!
