We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter: Horribly Fascinating!

Let me start this review by stating that this book by author Georgia Hunter is a story that at the same time is horrible, overwhelming, beautiful and intensely fascinating. And when you have finished the book, you will be touched and shocked. The book is based on a true story and the events which the author was told by her surviving family Kurc members.

Te follow the different family members during the war and their desperate attempts to avoid the Nazis and their concentration camps and the destiny that will inevitably follow. Some family members are sent to labor camps in Siberia when Stalin takes control over part of Poland. Another family member ends up in Brazil, some members barely survive the hardships of the Ghetto while others live in hiding for years housed by kind Polish people. But despite all physical and mental cruelties the Kurc family survive by their will to live so they can see and meet their loved ones again.

What makes this book so special as I have mentioned before is that it is based on the author’s own Polish family and how they against all horrible odds finally meet each other again. They were the lucky ones.

When you read this book, I promise you a journey with the Kurc family which will stun and horrify you and which you’ll not be able to forget for some time. I give We Were the Lucky Ones my warmest recommendations.
