San Sebastian: Jewel of the Basque Country!

San Sebastian or Donostia, as the city is called in Basque, is an exceptionally beautiful place. The city is breathtakingly located at the foot of the Basque Country’s green mountains, the Pyrenees. Right in the corner of the Biscay, where Spain and France meet. In other words, out to the Atlantic Ocean, which gives you a somewhat different climate to the Mediterranean. Not so hot and with more rain. But don’t be scared. The climate is extremely pleasant.

San Sebastian has approx. 180,000 inhabitants. The city is located in La Concha Bay, which has formed a horseshoe-shaped beach that is incomparably beautiful, and San Sebastian has for decades been a sought-after resort for the rich and the noble. The place offers three beautiful sandy beaches Playa de la Concha and Ondarette below the two promontories Urgull and Igeldo with the small island of Santa Clara situated in the middle of the bay. In addition, there is also the beach Zurriola.

On the beaches, you can see the locals enjoy themselves side by side with tourists and surfers, who all love the small lagoon and where boats and ships are anchored- a beautiful sight from all angles.  The river Urumea separates two of the beaches, and on either side of the river you will find in the city shady avenues and promenades lined with shops. If you are into shopping, there are many options in San Sebastian.

Do yourself a favor and start your visit with a walk along the beautiful and wide beach promenade from the town hall and almost all the way to the cable car entrance. It is a beautiful and breathtaking walk, where you’ll get an fine impression of the gem you are visiting.

In San Sebastian, the cozy old quarter (Ciudad Vieja) attracts a lot of visitors. The district, with its narrow streets, is full of delicious restaurants and bars. In addition, there are a multitude of small charming shops selling all kinds of goods.

San Sebastian has earned a well-deserved reputation as a gastronomic stronghold. The city boasts the highest number of Michelin restaurants per population in the world, making it a culinary pilgrimage for food enthusiasts. Pintxos, the Basque version of tapas, are an integral part of the local dining scene. Stroll through the streets of Parte Vieja (the old town) and enjoy a variety of small plates full of delicious ingredients and flavors.

But if you come for lunch, here is piece of advice. Be ready before 12.00.

San Sebastian’s cultural heritage is significant and can be seen and experienced in the city’s architecture, festivals and museums. The San Telmo Museum gives you a fine insight into Basque history and culture, while the Kursaal Congress Centre, with its avant-garde design, is the venue for film festivals and other cultural events. Held every year in September, the international film festival attracts international attention and showcases a wide range of film genres.

Nature enthusiasts will find plenty to explore in the surrounding areas. You’ll find hiking trails that cross the surrounding hills and offer you breathtaking views of the coast. In addition, the nearby Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve is a paradise for birdwatching and you can enjoy unspoiled landscapes.

With its fantastic beaches, world-class cuisine and vibrant culture, San Sebastian is a destination for everyone. Whether you’re a foodie, a history buff or just looking for beach life by the sea, this Basque gem promises an unforgettable experience that combines tradition and modernity in a truly breathtaking way.
