The Beautiful Catedral Metropolitan de Santa Maria la Real in Pamplona.
Pamplona, located in northern Spain in Navarra, is known worldwide for its famous San Fermín festival, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages. According to legend, the city’s patron saint, San Fermin, was dragged through the city by large, strong bulls.
We had the pleasure of visiting the charming city of Pamplona with approx. 185,000 inhabitants in May 2023. It was a very positive experience.
In the week from 6 to 14 July at eight every morning, bulls are let loose in the streets and during the nine-day fiesta, fearless people from all over the world flock to the city. Everyone is welcome to challenge fate by running in front of the bulls on the 825 m long route, which ends in the bullring of Pamplona.
Ernest Hemingway was very fond of Pamplona, and he was very fascinated by bullfighting and the associated macho culture. His fascination with Pamplona meant that he visited the city a total of nine times. He described the culture of Pamplona in the book “The Sun Also Rises”. Pamplona is on the other hand also very fond of Hemingway and statues of the famous writer can be seen several places.
But there is much more to experience in this beautiful city than Hemingway and bulls.
Pamplona is a city that combines history, culture and nature in a unique way. The old town is a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets where you can wander around and discover small shops, cafes and restaurants. It is a paradise for those who love architecture as the city is full of beautiful churches and museums.
One of the most impressive sights in Pamplona is the Cathedral, Santa María la Real, which is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Inside the cathedral you will find beautiful works of art and an atmosphere that invites you to quiet reflection. The cathedral is also a stop on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela with approx. 565 km from Pamplona and to the end of the pilgrim route in Santiago de Compostela.
Overall, our visit to Pamplona was a real pleasure. The city has a unique blend of tradition and modernity, and its inhabitants are friendly and welcoming. I can only recommend that you visit Pamplona and experience all the beauty and culture the city has to offer.

The historic and impressive City Hall of Pamplona

Statue of Ernest Hemingway outside the bullfighting ring in Pamplona. I thought old Hemingway needed a little fun.

A photo of a photo from the bullfighting ring. The photo shows how the bulls run into the arena after having run loose in the streets. Every night during the week long festival there is bullfighting in the arena.

My wife also wanted to try to be a bullfighter. Clearly, she misunderstood something.

A picture taken from the inside of Café Iruna which was Hemingway’s favorite hangout in Pamplona.

In café Iruna a special room has been dedicated to Hemingway.
