I generally like watching series from other countries to learn about their cultures and ways of living. This doesn’t mean that I avoid American series. By no means. And to prove that I have this time chosen to write a review about a series which wasn’t given the credit that I thought it was due.
Clickbait is the name of the series. It is a crime series and as I mentioned it has been given a lot of flak from different reviewers which I think by and large was unjust. Clickbait has its qualities and what they are I’ll get back to.
Clickbait starts off by showing a video of a beat-up man holding a sign that says” At 5 million views I die”. The man on the video is soon recognized to be Nick Brewer. A man who is apparently happily married, a father of 2 teenage sons and who has a job at a local high school. Why has he ended up being kidnapped?
It is Nick’s sister who first sees the video which comes as a total bomb shell to her. She contacts the police and Nick’s wife. From here on events escalate as police, family members and colleagues become involved in solving Nick’s kidnapping. The investigation is quite pressed for time due to the minute-by-minute increasing number of people who are watching Nick’s video. Remember 5 million views and Nick dies. This simple technique is of course enhancing the suspension.
Clickbait wins me over because every episode has a different character as the main person e.g., Nick’s sister, his wife, the school secretary, one of his sons etc. This trick involves the viewer in quite a different way than if we just followed one or two persons throughout the series.
Besides the kidnapping we have the usual family conflicts. Nick’s sister who is nicely put it something else. His wife who might be holding back secrets. A high school colleague who acts quite suspiciously. A police investigator who has a hard time being accepted by his surroundings and the list goes on.
Despite the many complications and the different perspectives that we are being introduced to Clickbait is thrilling to watch and the plot is not that easy to unravel. Clickbait simply grows on you as the case evolves.
Subsequently I would like to stress that this series for once do not take place in one of the usual major cities in the USA, but in Oakland in California. A city with about half a million inhabitants and a number of serious challenges. This new environment gives Clickbait an extra dimension.
I think you should give Clickbait a chance.
If you like my post or perhaps not I would love if you would send me your comments.
