Getaria: The Town for Explorers!

The town of Getaria is beautifully situated by a bay in the Biscay.

Getaria is a charming little town, beautifully situated by a bay of the Biscay. A 20 minutes’ drive from San Sebastian. The town has a fishing harbor and several top-class restaurants.

When you arrive in Getaria, you will immediately see the town’s picturesque and traditional architecture. Small cobbled streets that intertwine the town.

One of the main attractions in Getaria is the Juan Sebastián Elkano Museum, dedicated to the famous oceanographer and explorer who was born in the town. The museum tells the story of Elkano and his revolutionary oceanographic discoveries.

According to Wikipedia Juan Sebastián Elkano (born in 1486/87 and died on August 4, 1526) was a Basque explorer who worked for the Kingdom of Castile. Juan Sebastián Elkano took over the leadership of the expedition originally led by Ferdinand Magellan when Magellan was killed in the Philippines during the Battle of Mactan in 1521.

Elkano and the remaining 17 sailors thus ended up becoming the first people to sail around the world. The sailors returned to Seville on 8 September 1522 after a journey of 3 years and one month.

Elkano was awarded his own coat of arms with the motto Primus circumdedisti me – ‘You who first navigated around me’, and an annual pension. That was it for this monumental feat! He has not since been given the place in the history books he deserves.

Another must-see attraction is the Getaria sand branch that stretches out into the sea, offering stunning views of the coast and bay.

Getaria is also known as the birthplace of the famous fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. The town has built a beautiful, elevated and modern museum dedicated to his work and influence on the world of fashion. The museum has an impressive collection of Balenciaga’s beautiful creations and the place is a must-see for fashion lovers. Cristóbal Balenciaga lived from 1895-1972. Balenciaga fled during the Spanish Civil War to Paris, where he had his own fashion house from 1937-68. With his collections, he brought Spanish temperament and a traditional architectural style into French haute couture.

Another of Getaria’s attractions is its number of top class restaurants. You can eat at several delicious fish restaurants along the harbor, where you can taste local specialties and at the same time enjoy the fantastic view of the sea.

All in all, Getaria is an exciting destination that we didn’t know existed, but were recommended to visit. We were very grateful for that.

Visit the city, explore its history, taste delicious food and enjoy the atmosphere of this charming seaside town. You will not be disappointed.
