Balenciaga: Whether you are into Haute Couture or not? Watch this series!

The master himself: Cristobal Balenciaga.

I have to admit that in all my ignorance I had never heard of Balenciaga. Not until my wife and I, out of pure curiosity, visited the beautiful and modern museum in Getaria, which has been built for the city’s famous son.

I am not particularly interested in Haute Couture, but it was still a great experience to see the many incredible creations that Cristóbal Balenciaga designed during his many years as the master of Haute Couture.

Therefore, it was completely by coincidence that Disney+ had just released a very interesting and excellent series about Balenciaga. The series about the designer is called “The House of Balenciaga”. It gives the viewer a unique insight into the life and work of the iconic fashion designer.

We follow Cristobal Balenciaga’s journey from his humble beginnings in Spain to his success in Paris, where he revolutionized the fashion world. The series is populated with excellent actors. Especially the lead actor Alberto San Juan plays eminently.

A bit of background history about Balenciaga.

Cristóbal Balenciaga, often referred to simply as Balenciaga, was born on January 21, 1895, in the town of Getaria near San Sebastian in Spain. Balenciaga is still today considered one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century. Especially for his innovative design and craftsmanship.

Balenciaga’s fashion house, which he founded in 1919 in San Sebastian, Spain, moved and expanded to Paris in 1937. He soon became a household name on the Haute Couture scene.

Balenciaga’s creations were used by royalty, aristocrats and celebrities, which earned him a reputation as a master couturier. His Parisian salon attracted customers from all over the world, and he continued to influence fashion until he retired in 1968. He was especially known for his elegant and sculptural designs, which often included clean lines, precise tailoring and luxurious fabrics.

One of Balenciaga’s notable contributions to fashion was his experiments with silhouette and volume. He introduced new shapes and proportions, such as the barrel line, sack dress, and balloon rim. Creations which revolutionized the way women dressed. Balenciaga’s designs were hailed for their modernity and avant-garde approach.

Balenciaga died on March 23, 1972, but his legacy lives on through the continued success of the Balenciaga fashion house. Balenciaga continues to be a prominent brand in the fashion industry.
