The Labyrinth of the Spirits by Carlos Ruiz Zafón: Fantastic Book!

The Labyrinth of the Spirits is the last book in the series of books called The Cemetery of the Forgotten Books. The book takes place in Barcelona during Generallissimo Franco's dictatorship. As a child Daniel Sempere finds a book in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books that changes his life and which seems to be the key to his mother's death. Along the way trying to solve this mystery Daniel receives help by the heroine in the book Alicia Gris. Terrible misdeeds and atrocities happen before Alicia and Daniel gets to the bottom of the mystery.

The Labyrinth of the Spirits is the completion of Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s four-book series Cemetery of Forgotten Books, and it is the best one of the four books, I think. But judge for yourself. The three other books are: Shadow of the Wind, The Angel’s Game and The Prisoner of Heaven. The books can be read in any order.

The Spirits of the Labyrinth takes place in Barcelona during Generalisimo Franco’s dictatorship. When Daniel Sempere was a child, he finds a book in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. A book which changes his life, as the book seems to be the key to how his mother died.

But just as he thinks he has solved the riddle about his mother’s death he is captured in a conspiration which is more cynical and eviler than he could ever have imagined, and which again and again has tentacles back to Franco’s dictatorship. In the midst of this nightmare comes the story’s heroine Alicia Gris who along with her assistant helps Daniel to learn about the truth. On the way when they try to solve the mystery terrible misdeeds and violent events take place which remind the reader of the horrors and atrocities of the Nazis.

The Spirits of the Labyrinth is a fantastic book which I strongly recommend. It is well written, and the plot is intelligent and quickly absorbs the reader. You will remember this book long after you have read it. Please, read it.
