Black Space: Four Students Killed at a High School near Tel Aviv!

Netflix has an abundance of crime series. Some are excellent and many not so much. I genuinely love the genre and especially I fancy non-English speaking series. It is always a big thrill to learn about other cultures. This time I came across the Israeli crime series Black Space which stood out as a solid and well produced series. However, I might add I am not inclined to give the series a full six stars. But Black Space is fundamentally exciting, and the plot was both realistic and complicated enough to have me hanging on.

The series is about a school shooting at a high school in the Tel Aviv area in Israel. A group of heavily armed persons masked as unicorns enter the school while a large number of students are assembled to listen to the principal speaking. Amidst the havoc they create the group of unicorns shoot and kill four apparently random students.

The police quickly arrive at the crime scene and the rough around the edges and world-weary inspector Davidi takes charge of the investigation. It quickly dawns on you watching Black Space that just about everybody involved in the series has their own personal demons they are fighting including the inspector. Davidi is reluctantly expecting his first child with his wife who blames him for not being home when she needs him. Not only does he not want to become a father, but he is also neglecting orders from his superiors and on top of it all he is having serious problems with one of his eyes which was damaged when he was a student at the very same high school that he is now investigating.

Besides the mentioned problems Davidi is paired with a young female inspector from another police department. A pairing which at first glance is bound to fail. The chief of the police department believes that the shooting is a terrorist action, and the police quickly arrest some Palestinian construction workers who during the shooting took shelter on top of the school building. Davidi doesn’t believe the Palestinian workers were responsible for the killings and he defies his boss and starts to investigate the students. There are several hundred of them at the school but soon Davidi finds out that things are not what they seem to be. And then Black Space takes off.

The many characters in Black Space are multi-facetted and they appear realistic which make the series worth watching. As previously mentioned, I wasn’t blown away by Black Space but on the other hand I was well entertained. I therefore think that you should give Black Space a chance.

By the way Black Space is a computer program which the high-school students use to communicate with each other and not the universe.
