If you like John Le Carré I am sure you will also like Sleepers. It is a six-episode series taking place in Czechoslovakia just prior to the velvet revolution in 1989. East and West are fighting to gain as much influence as possible in the country before the communist regime collapses.
Sleepers is in short about the defected couple Marie and Victor who escaped to London in 1977 because Victor signed Charter 77. The couple now returns to Prague in 1989 as they can sense that great changes are on the way. Soon after the couple has arrived in Prague they are run over by a hit and run driver (or so we think). Marie is seriously injured and taken to the hospital while Victor disappears without a trace.
The Czech secret police StB, the British Embassy and the Russians all seem to have an interest in that Marie does not find out what has happened to Victor. At the same time Marie’s sister is also not too happy that she has returned.
Sleepers is a spy thriller series which is quite true to the seventies and eighties. The story is intelligent, and the actors are fine. However, I had to be very attentive as I found the Czech names to be somewhat confusing, but it was very liberating that there wasn’t much violence in Sleepers and that the suspense was in following Marie and her tireless search for Victor and to find out the truth about him. Apparently, he was not the man she thought he was.
You can watch Sleepers on HBO Europe.
If you like my post or perhaps not I would love if you would send me your comments.
