Riga: A real Treasure Chest!

Riga is the capital in Latvia. Around 700,000 people live in Riga which in many ways is a modern European city mange flotte bygninger og bydele, museer, kirker og imponerende bygninger. Riga is an architectonic treasure chest with a multitude of beautiful buildings such as museums and churches, but also the old town with many cozy shops, squares, and restaurants.
The impressive Russian-Orthodox cathedral. The cathedral was built from 1876 to 1884 in a typical Byzantine style with five golden domes.

Riga is as you probably know the capital of Latvia. One of the three Baltic countries. The city holds about 700,000 people and is by far the biggest city in the country. Riga is in many ways a modern city, but there are areas characterized by the Soviet era and many Russian people live in the city.

There are a multitude of exciting sights to see and experience in Riga. There is the old town, where you have beautiful churches to see while at the same time you can enjoy the tranquility of open squares and small and narrow streets where one exciting shop are replaced by another. Fortunately, you can also enjoy a coffee or a lunch in one of the many cozy restaurants or cafes that you find in between the shops. If you have a craving for a modern shopping center, you can easily find one.  Riga is also characterized by the many colorful wooden houses which are situated on the other side of the river Daugava which runs through the city.

As I have mentioned before Riga is in many ways an architectonic treasure chest with countless exciting buildings. The city is a mixture of old and new, where you can see the different periods of time when the city was occupied by foreign powers. I can only recommend that you buy a travel guide, so you get as much as possible out of your visit to this exciting city. There are really many exciting and interesting places to visit in Riga.

Hotels and food are somewhat cheaper compared to the average European country while you must expect to pay the same when you go shopping.

One of the many cozy streets in the old part of town in Riga.
The house of the Blackheads in Riga. The house was built in 1344. The Blackheads were a guild of unmarried merchants from Germany. The house is equally impressive inside.
The Monument of Freedom in Riga. An important symbol for the Latvians.
The big market in Riga which stretches both indoors and outdoors. The planning of building the market took place in 1922 and the buildings were erected from 1924 to 1930. The main buildings in the market consist of five pavilions constructed by reusing old German Zeppelin-hangars. The market is 778,000 square feet and has more than 3,000 stands.

Medieval restaurant with servants dressed as monks. Very authentic atmosphere ( I think).
The national opera
Post-Soviet era building. You can still find many examples of buildings like this. Especially outside of central Riga.
