Chaos is the key word in the description of season 5 of Fargo. Already in the opening scene of episode 1, there is a meeting that goes completely wrong. We are in a school auditorium in Scandia, a suburb of Saint Paul in 2019. During this meeting, all hell breaks loose. Parents and school staff run around in wild panic.
A frail woman Dot Lyon tries to get her daughter Scotty to safety, but she has to use her stun gun first on a teacher who is screaming into her head. And then a local police officer who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The slender woman is handcuffed and driven away in a police car. And then we’re up and running, and it’s going fast.
Dot is married to Wayne who is moderately smart. Wayne makes a living as a Kia car dealer. The couple lives modestly, although Wayne is the son of Lorraine Lyon, who owns a debt collection company and is a billionaire. Lorraine is a tough cookie.
Unfortunately, Wayne has still strong ties to his extremely dominant mother. Lorraine lives in a large mansion and has a lawyer Danish Graves living there. Danish wears a patch over one eye, which is the same color as his white hair.
At the same time, we switch to North Dakota. Here we find the powerful sheriff Roy Tillman, who has an extremely relaxed and individual view of law and order.
Roy lives on a ranch out on the prairie and we watch Roy Tillman sitting in an outdoor bath contemplating. He is still looking for his wife Nadine, who disappeared 12 years ago. He married her when she was 15 and she left him when she was 17.
Roy likes to quote the Bible frequently. He is married again and has two daughters. His son Gator from his first marriage, before he married Dot, is employed as a deputy sheriff. Gator is a very self-confident young man, even if everything he does fails.
The action picks up when Dot is kidnapped from prison by two masked men. And then you better hang on because now things are moving fast.
The series is based on a true story, and they say that reality surpasses imagination. I have to say, it does in season 5. Rarely have I watched in disbelief and laughed so loudly at how fucked up everything is in season 5.
The fifth season of Fargo is funny, dramatic, violent, insane and scary – everything Fargo fans expect. The Cohen brothers have indeed left their distinct fingerprints.
If you are into incomprehensible humor and action, then this series is excellent. In any case, I enjoyed Fargo season 5 immensely.
